Arete Aut Nausicaa?
Syracuse
Why isn't Syracuse the Capital of Sicily?

A provoking question certainly but a very reasonable one to ask. No other city in Sicily has the same pedigree or achievement in statehood, ambition, literature, art and science as Syracuse.

The study conducted so far shows that Syracuse was the ancient capital of Sicily and after the defeat of Athens became the Capital of the Grecian world. Feared by Athens as much as Athens feared Sparta or Corinth and, alas, militarily defeated by Syracuse through the help of Corinth and the leadership of a  Spartan. Someone could turn this circular episode into a theme for a novel or even a film.

The following notes have been prepared as a conscious tribute to this ancient city.
